Achoo! Do bonsai trees release pollen too?
Hello, everyone.
This is NAGINOWA staff.
Here in Tokyo, where NAGINOWA is located, we can feel spring in the air, but we’re still suffering from pollen allergies.
I imagine some of you bonsai enthusiasts also suffer from hay fever.
So, the question that comes to mind is: Do bonsai trees produce pollen?
As the author, I was very curious about this, so I decided to look into it.
To sum up, whether pollen is released or not depends on the plant species.
Bonsai Trees Prone to Pollen Dispersal
Examples:
- Japanese cedar
- Japanese cypress
- Pine
Since these tree species are wind-pollinated, they release pollen into the air.
Because the pollen is small and light, it disperses easily.
Bonsai that produce little pollen:
Examples:
- Cherry
- Plum
- Camellia
Since these species rely on insects for pollination, their pollen does not travel far.
It could also be said that their pollen is heavy, which makes it less likely to disperse.
So, while bonsai trees do release pollen, it’s not really a problem if you choose the right species.
However, people with severe hay fever should probably avoid trees like cedar and cypress. (Like me, for example.)
Well, I’m still suffering from pollen allergies, but I’ll wrap it up here for today.
