Popular Tree Species - Are They Different in Japan and the U.S.? #US Edition

Bonsai is gradually becoming a popular hobby in the United States.
Though we call them “bonsai,” the types of trees used are incredibly diverse.

Additionally, certain types of bonsai are easier to grow depending on the country and climate.

So, We looked into whether there are differences in tree species popularity between the United States and Japan.

In this blog post, we'll introduce tree species popular in the United States.


1. Ficus
A tropical plant primarily found in Southeast Asia. It thrives in high humidity. The species Ficus ginseng is toxic to pets, so caution is advised.

 

2. Brazilian Rain Tree
A broadleaf tree native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. Characterized by slender branches, small leaves, and thorns, its flowers are white or pink. It is an ideal species for beginners as it is easy to care for indoors.

 

3. Hawaiian Umbrella Tree
A tropical tree native to Australia. It thrives even in low-humidity, dimly lit areas, making it ideal for beginners. Caution is advised as it is toxic to pets.

 

4. Japanese Maple
Known as "Momiji" in Japan, this tree species is native to Japan, China, and the Korean Peninsula. It turns red in autumn and sheds its leaves in winter. It is beloved by bonsai enthusiasts not only in America but around the world.

 

5. Pine
The quintessential bonsai tree. Famous varieties include the five-needle pine, black pine, and red pine. They thrive even in partial shade. The five-needle pine is particularly cold-hardy, making it suitable for beginners. The black pine is especially popular among pines. The red pine is delicate.

 

6. Juniper
An evergreen coniferous shrub native to North America, Europe, and Asia up to 30 degrees north latitude. It bears two types of leaves: needle-like leaves and scale-like leaves. In Japan, it is called “Shinpaku” and is a popular species for bonsai, rivaling pine.
