Popular Tree Species - Are They Different in Japan and the U.S.? #Japan Edition
Last time, we introduced popular bonsai tree species in the United States.
Now, I'd like to introduce popular species in Japan as well, but first, let's briefly review the characteristics of Japan's climate.
Japan is a country with distinct four seasons, featuring a unique rainy season in summer that tends to be humid, and dry winters.
Now then, in this article, we'll introduce popular tree species in Japan.
1. Pine
Examples include red pine, black pine, and five-needle pine. Among bonsai, it is the most popular. Since pines grow into various shapes in nature, nearly any tree form can be achieved.

2. Juniper
As famous as pine for bonsai material. Chinese juniper, Japanese juniper, and European savin are popular. Numerous varieties exist worldwide.

3. Needle Juniper
Refers to the collective term for species such as Japanese arborvitae, Japanese white cedar, and Japanese black pine. They have needle-like leaves that are sharp enough to cause pain upon contact. The basic rule is to place them in a sunny, well-ventilated location rather than shade. As they are a species that prefers water, they also require thorough watering.

4. Cedar
A species with many variations found in nature, such as Yakusugi and Yoshino cedar. The basic rule is to place it in a sunny spot with good air circulation. Take special care to avoid dryness and wind during winter.

5. Japanese Cypress
An evergreen tree native to eastern Japan and Taiwan. It can reach heights of up to 40 meters (130 feet). Characterized by its scale-like leaves that spread flat. It is a monoecious plant bearing numerous spherical fruits. For bonsai cultivation, regular pinching and pruning are essential. It requires as much sunlight as possible even in winter. Additionally, protect it from freezing winds and frost during the winter months. In summer, be mindful of hot winds.

How did you like it?
Some trees are popular just like in America, while others are unique to Asia and Japan.
Especially trees like Japanese cypress require frequent pruning, so they might be popular with Japanese people who enjoy detailed work.
